If any of you have tried meditation, you know how hard it can be to quiet down the inner voice that keeps going on and on about the endless to-do list. I know my inner voice likes to talk non-stop and I can’t seem to shut her up sometimes. So when I decided to get back to my meditation practice, I struggled with applying meditation techniques I had read about. I turned to the Calm App because I really wanted to stick to my 30-day commitment. And I’m really glad I did because I loved using this App! It was user friendly, had a lot of options and programs, and the guided meditation helped me reach my inner quiet.
There are a number of guided meditations for relaxation, for self-love, for calm, or even walking meditation, at varying lengths of time (from 5 minutes up to 30 minutes). I particularly enjoy the deep sleep meditation practice – the nights that I don’t do it, it takes me longer to fall asleep.
There are also 7-day programs for anxiety, for improved focus, for happiness and the list goes on. I love these because you work on the same ‘issue’ for a week and the mental exercises build on each other.
For sleeping, in addition to the program and guided meditations, there are guided meditation to help you relax, but there are also sleep stories that are just like a bedtime story. Although I didn’t really get into this option, I see the appeal of it.
If you use the unpaid subscription, you don’t have access to a lot of the programs or guided meditations, but there’s the Daily Calm meditation, which changes every day. Before I took the plunge and paid for the membership, I did the Daily Calm meditations and really enjoyed them. But I felt like I need to use a wider variety of meditations to really benefit from them.
One of my favourite features of the Calm App is the Breathing Exercise that guides you through inhaling and exhaling to calm your mind, wherever you are. I’ve used this feature many times at work and found it very helpful in instantly calming me down if I started to feel stressed out.
I would highly recommend the Calm App if you are a beginner because it teaches the basic tools that you will need (i.e. learning how to breathe properly to calm you down!). For more advanced meditation practitioners, I think that the programs offer a good enough variety that will help you develop your skills. If it wasn’t for budgetary reasons (I want to try out different meditation apps) I would have kept my subscription because I made good use of it.
