When it gets cold, I stick to the same formula for an outfit: pants, a warm sweater, cute boots and accessories. Dresses are one of those things that I don’t like wearing in colder temperatures because: a) I get cold really easily; b) I find tights really uncomfortable; c) I feel like wearing a dress is a big deal (there is no logical explanation to point c so just go with it.).
In the spirit of pushing myself out of my comfort zone and wearing outfits that I usually shy away from, I decided to wear this simple long-sleeve cotton dress, and paired with the gold heel boots. I styled the look with this amazing burgundy hat that instantly elevates an outfit.
Here are a few easy tips on how to wear a dress in cold weather, which I will also be using, even though winter is coming (GoT reference anyone?):
{ Find the right tights }
I find tights uncomfortable, but these are from Primark and not only are they inexpensive, but they also hold really well so that I’m not tugging at them all the time! I love how opaque they are, and the thickness helps keep me warmer.
{ Booties }
Shoes make a huge difference in your outfit. With tights, make sure that there isn’t too much of a contrast with the color of the boots and the tights. Stick to the same tone and shade.
{ Accessories }
This is a recurring tip because it really makes a big difference in elevating an outfit. It’s as simple as putting on jewelry like cute earrings, bracelets and rings, or throwing a cute and scarf, especially to keep you warm!

Following these easy tips makes me want to wear dresses more often because if you think about it, it’s easier to throw on a dress and tights and accessorize your outfit, rather than matching your pants, top, and sweater, and all that jazz!
What are some ways that you elevate a dress? Are there some pieces that you shy away from? What are some concrete ways that you can start stepping out of your comfort zone and start wearing things that you avoid? Thanks Lauren! I love wearing dresses I just need to make sure to reach for it instead of pants!
Love your fierce look in the first picture of this post! And I love this outfit — the hat and necklace pop so perfectly against the black and omg I’ve been wanting a short sleeve coat like that since Fall started…where did you find this one?!
Your questions at the end always make me pause and think. As a fresh-out-tha’-box blogger, I’d have to say I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone in a different way: not by wearing certain styles that I usually avoid, but rather by allowing myself to invest in the styles and pieces that I’ve always loved but always talked myself out of for ‘practicality’ reasons. Just this year I’ve invested in three higher priced winter coats that in the past I never would’ve bought simply for the price. I know that they are truly an investment and as long as I’m smart about the styles, I’ll wear them for years to come. But I admit, I’ve always been a saver so I still worry sometimes that I’m being frivolous.
Having the blog purpose now definitely helps me to convince myself that I *need* an item that I’m eyeballing (lol), but in the same turn, since I’ve decided to start making those investments it has made me feel more determined to turn the blog into a successful business and therefore more passionate about it.
After all…”Great things never came from comfort zones” 😉
Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

You’re such a doll – thanks Tristan!!
I’ve had my jacket for AGES! And it’s a brand that doesn’t exist anymore – it’s Esprit! One of my favorite jackets!
I’m glad my questions make you think, that’s my intention!! And I love hearing your thoughts!!
I love the mentality of investing in pieces that make you excited to wear them and not sticking to simply ‘practical’ pieces. That’s something that I should keep in mind too! And lol at ‘needing’ vs. ‘wanting’ and using the blog as a justification. I don’t do that………(yeah right)
Love your dress and great tips!
